Mixed Media - Abstract of a Garden in Full Bloom Signed by Canadian Artist Vera Fischer - Double Matted in Champagne Wood Frame - The surge of colour reflects wind stirring flowers into activity - 25" W x 29" H

VERA FISCHER

Vera Fischer was born in Hungary.“I spent a great deal of time alone in the garden,” she says, “which allowed my imagination to flourish, resulting in many drawings of my surroundings.

During the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Vera’s parents chose to leave the country. The family lived in Saltsburg, Austria for about a year and then came to Canada and settled in Toronto. “My sister and I began school downtown as we lived on Lippincott Avenue,” she said. “I couldn’t speak English for the first six months and everything was very foreign to me. Art was how I was able to express myself and found it to be my solace for coping with loneliness and confusion.”

Following graduation from high school, her first job was with an animation company, creating background for cartoons (Rocket Robin Hood). It was an exciting and fun job but she moved on. For the next 10 years, she worked as a graphic artist for the Toronto Public Libraries. The next decade saw her painting and exhibiting her water colours and mixed media in galleries and shows. She also opened a storefront at Harbourfront Centre’s Queens Quay Terminal that showcased her work and gave her the opportunity to build a clientele.

About 10 years ago, she began to create what she calls ‘wearable art’. “I fell in love with the costume jewelry designs and designers of the 40s and 50s. The people who influenced me the most are Hattie Carnegie, Marcel Boucher, Miriam Haskell, and Weiss. I appreciate their sense of colour combination, craftsmanship and unique imagination. I started to take vintage broken pieces of jewelry and beads and create new works from old. My palette of paints was replaced by colour components of jewelry; I was creating three-dimensional art works. This became my new means of expression.”

For Vera, whether she is creating paintings or jewelry, her objective has always been the same: to create something uplifting, as well as unusual, that reflects who she is and her cheerful optimism. “The creative process for me,” she says, “is an essential, life-sustaining force. It is an expression of who I am. It nourishes me and lifts my spirit.”
